Architect Hank van Loon was born in 1907 to popular historian and journalist Hendrik Willem van Loon and his first wife, Eliza "Lily" Ingersoll (Bowditch) van Loon. In September, 1930, he married Janet Hall at Dorset, Vermont, where they ultimately made their home after periods of residency in New York and Connecticut.
The marriage ended with Janet's passing in 1971; van Loon remained at Dorset, where in his later years he was the partner of artist Lea (Weaver) Ehrich – each lived in their own dwelling on the same property, van Loon's home being a unique, cantilevered house, above a beaver pond, that he had designed himself. He died at Dorset in 1994, followed three years later by Lea Ehrich.
